Maha Shivaratri is an annual Hindu holiday, in which Shiva is honored. This year the date was March 4th, a few days prior to this posting. Last year I posted an old Shiva drawing. Here’s a brand new rendition. Drew the line work in fall 2018. Did color March 2019.

A few days ago was Maha Shivaratri, or Shivaratri. It’s annual holiday honoring the Hindu god Shiva. The “great night of Shiva” is a lunar holiday, falling on the 13th or 14th during the winter season.

After a few days past 2018’s Shivaratri, I came across old artwork from 2003. Totally forgot about this sketch. It was done while passing time at a former job. I worked at some pseudo-spiritual gift, clothing and bookstore, located in the East Village. The shop was on East 6th street. At the time East 6th street was lined with small Indian restaurants. Inside the shop I was surrounded by deity statues from various pantheons. Now that year of 2003 was particularly significant. It was right before entering my Thelemic phase, which lasted a few years.

Maha Shivatri is very important to Shivaites, or those who practice Shavism. Within Hinduism, there’s a sect devoted to Shiva and his teachings.  The Shavites worship Shiva as a supreme god.

I’m not one to look into the past. It’s not something I normally like to do. Living in the present is a personal preference because as they say, yesterday already happened, and tomorrow may never come. I’m not the same person I was ten years ago, seven years ago, or not even three years ago. My point of views have changed dramatically in the course of a decade. Hell, it’s changed dramatically since a year and a half ago.

Having said all of this, I suppose it’s important to archive. Unfortunately, some really neat pieces I’ve done are now forever lost. Which is why now I normally don’t like to sell or give away originals. Perhaps I shouldn’t even pine over lost work. After all, I’ve really grown as both an artist and as a person. Contrary to what former ‘friends’ might say about me.

Still, it would’ve been nice. I had illustrations of Ganesha, Shiva, and Alister Crowley for example, circa 2003-2005. There was some basic Goddess and ‘Wiccan’ illos from that same period. There was two watercolor pieces I did as gifts to friends. One was a Norse related item, based on the Sowilo rune. Don’t regret giving away those, after all, they were intended as gifts. Luckily, I still have some of the JPG files.

"Sowilo" based on Norse Rune. Pen, ink, watercolor.

Since Mercury in retrograde is going to happen very shortly, I’ll use this time for reflection. Expect to see some old work within the next few days.
