So news came down that comic book inker Joe Sinnott passed away the morning of June 25th, 2020. Sinnott was best for his work with Marvel comics. The legendary artist drew for iconic titles such as Fantastic Four, Captain America, and The Avengers. The comic book industry, such as the Inkwell Awards has been paying their respects to a legend. (Sinnott was involved with the Inkwell Awards)

Last year I was lucky enough to meet him at an Upstate NY comic con, IncrediCon. That day was a good day. My table was in between two talented artists, sold some of my own comics, did a commission, and met an Instagram friend.

As things were winding down, I decided to pop by Joe Sinnott‘s table. Sinnott, the guest of honor was sitting next to his son. Taking a chance, I asked if Mr. Sinnott was still doing commissions. Surprise – he was! So I got a commission as a birthday present for Ben. Sinnott drew one of the classic Marvel characters, Thor.

After I picked up the commission, I believe his son told me Joe was still drawing everyday. Apparently he drew everyday until the end. That itself, is inspiring to any artist. Age really is just a number. Age only matters when you allow yourself to be limited.

With that, my condolences to the Sinnott family. Thank you Joe Sinnott for the many years you spent creating. Godspeed.

*Thanks to Ben Herman for images of comics featuring Joe Sinnott’s signature.

The weekend after Cradle Con 2019, I headed to Upstate NY for IncrediCon. This edition of IncrediCon was in Middletown, NY. The guests of honor included legendary Marvel comic book artist Joe Sinnott, Disney Comic Writer Joe Caramagna, and The Great Space Coaster’s Jim Martin.

Other people from the comic book industry were there, such as: Ray Felix, Robert J. Sodaro, and John Wilcox. Rounding out IncrediCon was local vendors.

During IncrediCon itself, I met and befriended two very nice artists: Scott Ebisch and Vid Alliger. Since we sat next to each other, we conversed in between some downtime.

Later on I met Joe Sinnott, who was gracious enough to do a sketch. (Sinnott is also a recipient of two awards: Inkwell and Inkpot) The sketch was a birthday present for Ben Herman. Joe Sinnott is retired from the comic book industry, but still draws everyday. Accompanying him was his son, Mark Sinnott. The fact that he agreed to do a sketch was an amazing surprise. It’s something I was eternally grateful for. (Note: On his website, it states he is no longer doing commissions or interviews. Joe Sinnott still does autographs.) You can check out the sketch below.

Later on, I did two quick sketches of my own. One was a commission, the other was a sketch requested by John Wilcox.

During the commission, I met someone from Instagram, who goes under the name GothBear666. It’s a cute account of someone wearing a bear mask showing his collection of classic Post-Punk band tee shirts.

Friday, June 15, 2018 was the 11 annual Inkwell Awards, taking place at Heroes Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. For those who don’t know much about comic book inking, here’s a good blog post to explain. This year, not only was it the 10th anniversary, but also the debut of the “Above & Beyond” Award. Above & Beyond was created to honor members, volunteers and others who exceptionally served in promoting the art form of comic book inking and ink artists. In addition there were the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award and the annual Stacey Aragon Special Recognition Award.

The Inkwell Awards was created by comic book artist and inker Bob Almond. Assisting him was two Ms. Inkwell spokes-models, Hailey Skaza-Gagne (formerly known as Holly Black) and Kathy Taylor. We finally had the chance to meet Bob Almond earlier this year at East Coast Comicon. He was accompanied with gorgeous Ms. Inkwell spokes-model, Skylar Lauren Godwin.
